YOU GET THAT CALL OR EMAIL FROM THAT GUY “THE FAKE PARTNER”. FROM ONE WORD “PARTNERSHIP” YOU WILL KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TYPE OF PERSON THEY ARE.

THEY USE THAT TERM “PARTNERSHIP” BUT IT MEANS SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO THEM. ITS LIKE CALLING A CAR A TREE. SEE THE EMAIL EXCHANGE BELOW!

SOME PARTNERSHIPS HAVE VALUE AND YOU MAY WANT TO LOOK INTO THEM. MOST “FAKE PARTNERSHIPS” ARE FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS NOTHING TO OFFER YOU BUT WANTS YOU TO FINANCE THEIR BUSINESS IDEA. AN IDEA THAT THEY THEMSELVES WONT FINANCE!

Having your own business is hard enough you really don’t need this guy showing up, but he does, endlessly. Just to put things in perspective I started and own HeroBuilders.com we started by making the George Bush Action figure right after 9-11. The company has since grown and Created new toy markets that have become worldwide successes. So I get or the company gets the “Partnership” calls or emails almost every week. After 20 years of experience, I know what is happening and now I just ignore and/or just do not engage. I only kept this recent exchange because I have decided to blog my business experiences in the hope that I can help new people starting their own businesses. I think documenting those experiences goes a long way.

When I first started my businesses including this one I have gotten at least 1000 requests for the fabled partnerships. The exchanges are all the same, but before I get into all that check out this unsolicited email exchange below:

HIM: Dear Emil Vicale,

I have developed an idea for an impulse purchase, the interactive political doll I believe has enormous potential. I am making a few prototypes in China and would like to know how you work, and how we can get it out massively, next Xmas through a major distributor.  I am talking about an item that would sell for $19.99 or $24.99 and easily reach a million sales.  I am looking for a partner/distributor.  Please let me know if you can become involved in contacting the right party, and how you would participate.

 ME: What type of help do you need? And when will you have the production parts landed in the USA?

HIM: Hi, Emil…thanks for getting back to me so quickly; glad I’m not the only one working on Sunday! The item I have in mind is intended and ideal for a next Christmas release.  What I need is I ran a paperback publishing company a few years ago and the way in which a printing run of, say 200,000 copies of a particular title, was securing a minimum advance from the distributor, that would cover the printing cost.  If the title was hot enough, this was not a problem. And since all titles were movie tie-ins, this was not difficult to estimate. I know the idea I have at present (and valid for at least another year and a half) is topical and extremely marketable.  So, what I would need is help to reach a distributor able to provide a guarantee that would cover the basic cost of manufacture — less than 20% of the sales price. And since finding, reaching out and negotiating with the right distributor would be to time-consuming for someone not familiar with this marketplace, I need someone with the track record and connections necessary to set up such a deal together, and advice on delivery to said, distributor.

 HIM AGAIN: I have to add, by the way, that the first run of a book was decided in conjunction with the distributor, who in turn requested pre-sales estimates from booksellers before committing to a run and an advance based on it.  I assume the same would be offered to a toy distributor. 

 ME: I see if I can reach out to some people, but on the face, the toy industry is different no one will give guarantee for anything the market, especially for a political toy, is very problematic right now. I don't know if you know who I am but I started the Political toy industry over 20 years ago with the introduction of the George Bush,,, and still own that company today and I can say for sure that we are not interested in making any deals with outside interests.

 HIM:      Of course, I knew who you were; that is precisely why I reached out to you.  If anyone could give me a knowledgeable answer it would be you. If you still own and are active in the political doll industry, perhaps you should consider the possibility of an accommodation that would not conflict with your company’s interests.  I’m not in this business to say, only to sell this particular doll idea.  I am in an entirely different business and will stay in it.

ME: Feel free to send thru a proposal on what do you think is the proper amount I should be compensated as a consultant for this project? Knowing what I know and understanding to do this correctly will take 1000's of hours of time to do correctly...

HIM: Hi, Emil…What would be possible for me would be to offer you a share in the enterprise?  Say something along the lines of…

a) You help find a distributor who will commit to an initial order (100,000-200,000?) and advance or guarantee 20% of the wholesale price.  In this case, you receive a 10% agent’s commission of net revenues perceived by MTLA CREATIONS.

b) Your company manufactures the doll (in China, I assume, where I have gotten the best quotes and developed the design for the samples) and deals with all distribution.  In this case, MTLA CREATIONS receives 10% of gross wholesale revenues until you recoup the investment and 30% thereafter.

 c)  You propose a different arrangement.

 ME: Neither of these will make sense for us for many reasons.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE “THE FAKE PARTNERS”

Well I'm not a psychologist, so I won't, go down that road, but from my own experiences, they are kind of go-getters who want to do things. The main problem with these people as I see it is they want all the success that you have attained and want to emulate what you have done BUT they do not want to take the TIME or FINANCIAL RISK or LIFE RISK it takes to make a business endeavor happen. They want, want, want but won't take that RISK, and they won't take that risk because they feel what is theirs is theirs and what's yours is theirs. Lets not forget TIME, they want to get their FAST, because why should they waist their time when you have all the answers……..

If you want to go down this path with these types of people by all means do but please remember and listen to what they are actually saying to you is:

What they are actually saying is that their life and family is more important than yours, and therefore you should do what they want at your risk and expense. And so to me this person is a horrible person and useless to you and your business.

My Advice is: Stick to your plan, after all you are paying for it with your TIME and your MONEY! Forget these people you will meet hundreds of them in your lifetime they are all scam artist and fake partners….and to really be honest they are all full of shit

When writing content for a website you need to understand who or what you are writing for.

The biggest mistake you can make in business is to think that you are is smartest person in the room.

Yep its Monday and I have to laugh. Just to put things in context I am an internet of things expert I have been on the internet since the mid-1990’s and have been in the business world since the 1980s. Today I was contacted by someone who “found” my website on the internet, Ill state that again “found” my website on the internet. To my surprise rather than being a customer who needed my help, she went on to explain to me that “she could help me” to place higher in search engines (SEO) by using “PROPER” writing techniques.

Yep it was lesson time, you can bet I asked what she exactly she meant and drilled down a bit. What she was actually referring to was my lack of proper “AMERICAN ENGLISH” writing techniques and the fact that I “CAPITALIZE” and use “BOLD” type a lot on the website, and what is worse there was a (one) misspelled word (that she found) there are actually a countless amount of miss-typed words.

Laughing loudly (which is rude by the way) I asked if I stopped capitalizing, and then started using proper English and fixing that one misspelled word would that help in SEO? There was silence because she did not know. But she did recover by rambling on about her education and the writing classes she took in college and that she was an English minor (everyone in America is an English minor) etc…. (me laughing like a madman inside), silence………………

I took a DEEP breath and I tried to not only compose myself but control what I was actually going to say in place of what I really wanted to say (which I am sure would have made her question life itself). After I calmed myself and understood her lack of experience and understanding of how to write properly for the circumstance, yes circumstantial writing it’s a thing. I was able to get these final words out before it was time to cut our conversation off.

“It seems that because of my lack of proper English and improper writing techniques that you know who I am and because of your educated and proper writing techniques I have no idea who you are, and that is SEO at its finest!”

How to make this business contact the right way.

Simple is best, if you get that introduction, just explain how you can do your small part to help.. It is that simple comment goes a long way. More tips below.

  1. Be nice!

  2. Don’t bullshit ever. The BOSS has meet thousands of Bullshitters.

  3. Pointing out what you think are mistakes will immediately put the person off.

  4. Understand why you are on that side of the table.

  5. Explain that you would like to help and can free them up to focus on other things that the company “really” needs.

  6. Self deprecating humor always works for everything.

  7. You are not the smartest person in the room “clearly” if you do not know that already, guess what you do now .

Pay Shaming its a Thing. And it’s been going on since the beginning of time.

OK, let me try to explain just a little more. When you as a consultant speak on a subject your words have value because they are connected to knowledge. When a Pay Shamer or Poor Mouth speaks on the same subject just words come out of their mouths and those words have no value, that is why they come to you.

You are a consultant, and one part of being a consultant means you talk with your mouth and knowledge comes out of your mouth. That knowledge is your value that knowledge took a lifetime to acquire or you have been educated at great expense in a specific area. You have value you need to be paid for your words.

No matter what you call them, Pay Shamers are all the same, they are weasels, shim shamers, flim flamers, low-level scam artists and they are always out to get something from someone to benefit themselves,,,,while all the time hoarding or keeping their money “wealth” away from you the consultant.

Let's discuss the first of the many money shamers that I have run into time and time again. I have been a consultant of sorts for over 25 years the scam or fraud never changes but the people do.

Poor Mouth, noun:

  1. a person who claims to be poor in order to benefit from others. "I am not crying the poor mouth but only telling it as it is"

  2. verb: claim to be poor. "the poor-mouthing museum is not exactly eager to publicize this good fortune"

I love these people they are like the baker who owns the bread store who every night walks home with a loaf of bread under each arm then complains about how hungry he and his family is.

The Poor Mouth is the lowest of the low they come to you asking for free stuff, but they are typically doing much better than you are. The scam is to try to make you feel bad about yourself because they are broke. These people are not broke and have no idea what being broke is actually like.

These people are easy to spot, on the outside they seem to live better than you, a house, 3 cars, 2 income household, etc. But it is never enough they want more and more and in my case as a business entrepreneur I get these people sniffing around at least every few months.

These people want to start that business but don’t want to pay you for all your wisdom in order to start their business. They act as if your words are free, as if the knowledge of your words just comes out of thin air. When in actuality those words are attached to complicated thoughts and knowledge that took a lifetime of blood sweat and tears to acquire.

How it starts: they come to you with all sorts of questions (consultation) and what seems to be work but really it isn’t work because they are not paying you and most likely won’t pay you if you answer those questions. When you let them know your rate for this consultation they will look at you like your the bad guy and then they will give you a reason for not being able to pay you. Here are some of my favorite reasons: their money is tied up, or it is going towards their retirement fund, or it is for the kids college and my favorite one is they have money but it is in their emergency fund. This is their sacred money that they just can’t touch.

Poor Mouths are also know as the takers (The Takers will be the second post) they are very selfish and that makes them tone def. They lack the basic understanding of how they sound. Here is some advice for all you Poor Mouths we hear you saying that your life, your health and your children are more important than my life, my health and my children and that you want more and more and more because in reality you are a scam artist.

Resolution: This person is horrible and you should hear them out totally and let them know you will get back to them. You can answer them in many ways the simplest is to tell them that you are still building your business and being you have ½ of what they have that you discussed working for free with your family and everyone thought that was a bad idea.  Or just tell them to F-off that works too.

YOUR LIFE HAS VALUE… ONLY WORK WITH PEOPLE WILLING TO PAY YOU WHAT YOU ARE WORTH.
